The verb comes from the Semitic root k-dh-b, which carries the idea of untruth and falsehood. The same root surfaces across the Semitic family with the regular sound shift of Proto-Semitic *ð, which became dhāl in Arabic and z in Hebrew. The basic Form I verb means to speak what is false.
