Etymology

The word comes from the triliteral root ح-ق-ب, tied to حَقَب, the strap fastened around a mount's belly. A حقيبة was first a bag stowed behind the rider on the back of the saddle. The sense later broadened to any bag or case for carrying belongings. The related verb اِحْتَقَبَ means to load such a bag onto a riding animal.
