Etymology

فَوْق comes from the Semitic root f-w-q, which carries the idea of rising above and surpassing. The same root gives the verb فاقَ, 'to excel or exceed', and the noun تَفَوُّق, 'superiority'. The word began as a marker of physical position, 'on top of', and extended to rank and degree, 'above all'.
