Etymology

The verb grows from the Semitic root ʿ-r-ḍ, which carries the sense of width and breadth. The related noun عَرْض means width, the opposite of length. To present something is to set it broadside before another person, to spread it out for view. The same root gives Arabic its words for an exhibition, a military review, and a business offer.
