Etymology
The root و-ر-ق first meant leaf and foliage. From the flat green leaf the collective وَرَق came to mean any thin sheet, and so it became the ordinary word for paper. The same Semitic root points to colour, green and yellow, as in Akkadian warāqu, to be green or yellow. It also gave وَرَّاق, the copyist and paper seller of the medieval book trade.
