Etymology
The word derives from the Arabic triliteral root ع-د-ل (ʕ-d-l), which carries the sense of balance, straightness, and equal measure. From the same root come the verb عَدَلَ, to act justly or to make equal, and the adjective عادِل, just. عَدالَة is the abstract noun formed on the فَعالة pattern, naming the quality of being just.
