Etymology
The word comes from the Semitic root ن-ظ-ر (n-ẓ-r), "to look, see, observe." From it Arabic built the adjective نَظَرِيّ ("of looking, theoretical"), and the feminine ending turned that adjective into an abstract noun. The shift from "looking" to "theory" mirrors Greek theōría, which also began as "a looking at, contemplation."
