The verb comes from the Arabic root m-w-n, tied to the noun maʾūna, meaning provisions or victuals. Form II, with its doubled middle radical, adds a factitive sense: to furnish someone or something with provisions. The same root gives tamwīn, the standard term for state food supply and rationing in modern Arab administration.
