Etymology
The word comes from bunduq, meaning hazelnut, which Arabic took from the Greek name for the Pontic nut. Bunduq also came to mean a small ball or pellet, the kind once shot from a pellet-bow. When firearms arrived, the weapon that fired such shot kept the name, and bunduqiyya settled into its modern sense of rifle. The same bunduq, by a separate path, gives Arabic its name for the city of Venice, al-Bunduqiyya.
