Etymology
The word comes from the Semitic root ʿ-ṣ-r, which carries the sense of pressing or squeezing, as in pressing juice from fruit. From that base the noun took on the meaning of a stretch of time: an age or era, and also the late afternoon, the part of the day pressed toward evening. The two senses, time and pressing, sit side by side in the same root.
