Etymology
مارّ is the active participle of the form I verb مرّ (marra), "to pass, to pass by," from the triliteral root م-ر-ر. It follows the فاعل (fāʿil) doer pattern, but because the root is geminate the two identical rāʾ contract into one written with a shadda. As a noun it names the agent of the action: the one who passes, a passer-by.
