عِطْر comes from the Arabic triliteral root ع-ط-ر (ʿ-ṭ-r), which carries the sense of fragrance and sweet scent. Classical Arabic sources tie the root to perfumery and the trade in aromatic substances such as musk, incense, and floral extracts across the Arabian Peninsula. The same root gives Arabic عَطَّار (perfumer or spice seller) and عَاطِر (fragrant). The English word attar, used for concentrated flower oils like attar of roses, is a direct loan from this Arabic root by way of Persian.
