عِناق is the verbal noun of the Form III verb عانَقَ, meaning to embrace one another. Both trace to the Semitic root ع-ن-ق (ʿ-n-q), whose core sense is neck, since a hug is literally an arm placed around the neck. The same root gives Arabic عُنُق, neck.
