قَمَرmoon (same root, unrelated sense in daily use)Etymology
Qimār comes from the Semitic triliteral root q-m-r (ق-م-ر), cast in the fiʿāl pattern that Arabic often uses for verbal nouns describing a contest or exchange, as in jihād or nizāl. The same root gives qamar, the moon, and classical Arabic lexicographers traditionally link the two senses through the idea of a fortune that waxes and wanes like the moon. The verb qāmara, to gamble with someone, and the noun muqāmara, an act of gambling, share this root.
