Etymology
مَزِيد comes from the Semitic triliteral root ز-ي-د (z-y-d), 'to increase or add.' It is the passive participle of the verb زادَ (zāda), 'to increase,' built on the maf'ūl pattern; the original form *mazyūd contracted to mazīd because of the weak middle yāʾ. The participle 'that which is increased' then served as a noun meaning 'more' or 'an addition.'
