Etymology
مَزاد comes from the Arabic root ز-ي-د, which carries the sense of increase or excess. It is built on the مَفْعَل pattern, used for nouns of place or event, applied to the hollow verb زاد (yazīdu), meaning to increase. An auction takes its name from the way bids keep rising, each one exceeding the last.
