Etymology
حِضانة is the verbal noun (masdar) of the Form I verb حَضَنَ (ḥaḍana), built on the triliteral Semitic root ح-ض-ن. The root's core sense is to hold something against the chest or under the wing, as a bird does with its eggs. From that physical image the word branched into two everyday senses: the legal or parental sense of raising and caring for a child, and the concrete sense of a place where young children are kept and tended, a nursery.
