Etymology
The word comes from the Proto-Semitic root ẓ-h-r, meaning to appear or become visible. Arabic ظاهِرَة is the feminine active participle of the verb ظَهَرَ (zahara, to appear, become manifest), used as a noun for something that shows itself openly, an observable event or occurrence. The same root gives ظاهِر (visible, apparent) and مَظْهَر (appearance).
