The word comes from the Arabic triliteral root ج-ر-م (j-r-m), which carries the sense of cutting off or committing an offense. The Form IV verb أَجْرَمَ means to commit a crime, and its verbal noun إِجْرام means the act of committing crime. Adding the nisba suffix ي turns this noun into the adjective إِجْرامِيّ, meaning criminal or relating to crime. Because Arabic is a Semitic language, this root has no Indo-European origin.
