Etymology

The word comes from the Arabic root د-و-ر, which carries the idea of turning, revolving, or going around in a cycle. From this root comes the adjective دَوْرِيّ (dawriyy), meaning periodic or recurring, and adding the feminine ending ة produces دَوْرِيَّة, literally a recurring round. That sense of a repeated circuit gave rise to two everyday meanings: a patrol that repeatedly circles an area, and a periodical published at regular intervals.
