Etymology
The word is a direct transliteration of the European scientific term for oxygen, not a native Arabic coinage. The French chemist Lavoisier built the original term in the 1770s from Greek roots meaning 'acid' and 'producer,' since he wrongly believed the element formed all acids. Arabic simply borrowed the sound of the French or English word and fit it into an Arabic noun shape.
