The verb comes from the Semitic root ʿ-r-ḍ, whose base sense is to present, show, or lie crosswise. The Form III pattern (fāʿala) adds a sense of mutual or directed action, so ʿāraḍa came to mean setting oneself against something, that is, to oppose or object. This root is native to Arabic and not traced to an Indo-European source.
