عارِض is the active participle of the Form I verb عَرَضَ, meaning to present itself, appear, or come across someone's path. The root ع-ر-ض carries a core sense of width and exposure, which extends to something surfacing or intruding suddenly. From that same root come عَرْض (width, offer) and عَرَض (an incidental attribute or symptom).
