Etymology

The word comes from the Arabic root ḥ-l-b, the same root behind ḥalaba, 'to milk'. Classical dictionaries define al-ḥalba as horses gathered for a race from scattered stables rather than a single one. Over time the word shifted from naming the gathered horses to naming the ground where any contest takes place. Arabic is Semitic, not Indo-European, so no PIE root applies here.
