Etymology
The root f-ṣ-l means to sever, cut, or set apart. فصيل follows the faʿīl pattern, which often names the result of an action, so it denotes a part cut off from a larger whole. In classical usage this gave the weaned camel calf, an animal separated from its mother, and the military detachment, a unit split off from the main army. Modern usage extended the same idea to political or armed groups that break off from a larger movement, hence faction.
