Etymology
Qiyas is the verbal noun of the Form I verb qasa, yaqisu, built on the triliteral Semitic root q-y-s, which carries the core sense of measuring, gauging, or setting one thing against a standard. From this base sense of physical measurement, classical scholars extended the word to mean comparison by analogy, and it became a technical term in logic for the syllogism and in Islamic legal theory for analogical reasoning. The word is native Arabic vocabulary, not a borrowing from another language.
