Etymology

جاس comes from the Semitic root ج-و-س (j-w-s), a hollow verb built on the pattern of قال. Its most famous appearance is in the Quran, verse 17:5, describing invaders who went through the homes of a people, searching every corner. From this concrete image of moving through and scouring a place, later writers extended the verb to abstract searching, such as an investigator going through case details.
