Etymology
سال comes from the Semitic triliteral root س-ي-ل (s-y-l), which carries the core sense of liquid motion. It is a hollow verb: the middle radical ي merges with the preceding vowel, so the plain past tense surfaces as سَالَ rather than a form with a visible ي. The root also gives Arabic its everyday words for flood and liquid.
