Etymology
مُسْتَعِير is the active participle of the Form X verb اسْتَعَارَ (istaʿāra), built on the Semitic root ع-و-ر. That root's core sense is a gap or missing part, as seen in أَعْوَر (one-eyed) and عَوْرَة (an exposed, vulnerable spot). Borrowing extended this idea: taking an item leaves a temporary gap in the owner's possession. The noun mustaʿīr simply names the person who does this, the one who takes something on loan.
