Etymology
Shi'ar comes from the Arabic root sh-ʿ-r, the same root behind sha'ara (to sense or perceive) and shi'r (poetry). In early use a shi'ar was a watchword or war cry that let allies recognize one another in battle, since the root carries the idea of a distinguishing mark. The meaning later widened to any badge, emblem, or slogan that marks a group's identity, from a political chant to a company logo.
