Etymology
Shāʿir is the active-participle form of the verb shaʿara, meaning to feel, sense, or perceive. In early Arabic culture, the poet was believed to have a heightened perception, an ability to sense truths hidden from ordinary people. The word is Semitic, not Indo-European, so it has no Proto-Indo-European ancestor.
