Etymology
Arabic مترو is a direct borrowing of French métro, itself a shortened form of chemin de fer métropolitain, meaning metropolitan railway. Métropolitain traces back through Greek mētropolis, a compound of mētēr (mother) and polis (city), to describe the main or capital city. Arabic took the word wholesale in the twentieth century as underground rail systems opened in Cairo, Algiers, and other Arab cities, without adapting it to a native triliteral root.
