مُفْرِط is the active participle of the Form IV verb أَفْرَطَ (afraṭa), meaning to exceed a proper limit or go to extremes. Both derive from the triliteral root ف ر ط (f-r-ṭ), whose base sense is to go ahead of or overstep something. The participle pattern مُفْعِل marks the agent of that action, so مُفْرِط literally denotes one who, or that which, exceeds the due bound.
