Etymology

The word entered Arabic as a direct borrowing from Italian maccheroni, the plural of maccherone. Italian traders and, later, wider Mediterranean food culture carried the term into Arabic-speaking regions along with the pasta itself. Arabic reshaped the foreign word by adding the feminine ending ة, turning it into an ordinary singular noun. The ultimate source of the Italian word is disputed and may trace to Greek, but that link is not firm enough to state as fact.
