Etymology
Zahr comes from the Semitic root z-h-r, which carries the sense of shining or radiating. In Arabic this root gave rise both to words for light and brilliance and to words for flowers, since a blossom is seen as a burst of brightness on a plant. Zahr itself is a collective noun: it names flowers as a mass, while a single flower is zahra.
