The word comes from the Arabic root kh-r-j (خ ر ج), which carries the core sense of going out or exiting. Form V verbs in Arabic add the prefix ta- and double the middle root letter to give a reflexive or resultative meaning, so takharraja literally suggests bringing oneself out of a course of study. Over time this narrowed to the specific modern sense of finishing a degree and receiving a diploma. Arabic root systems are internal to the Semitic language family, so no Indo-European ancestor applies here.
