Etymology
رُومِيّ is built from the noun الروم (al-Rūm), the Arabic name for Rome and, later, for the Byzantine Empire. Arabic borrowed Rūm from contact with Aramaic and Greek speakers, tracing back to Latin Roma. Adding the nisba suffix -iyy turns the place name into a relational adjective, 'of Rome' or 'Roman'. Because medieval Arabic writers used الروم mainly for the Byzantines, the adjective often meant 'Byzantine' or 'Greek' rather than 'Italian Roman'.
