Etymology

تَحَتَّم comes from the Arabic root ح-ت-م (ḥ-t-m), which carries the sense of certainty, decree, and necessity. The base verb حَتَمَ means to decide or ordain something as final. Form V, تَحَتَّم, adds a reflexive sense, so the action turns back on its subject: a matter does not just get decreed, it becomes decreed, that is, it turns inevitable or obligatory on its own.
