Etymology
The root خ-ل-ل carries the core sense of a gap, a deficiency, or a disorder. From it, the Form VIII verb اختلّ (ikhtalla) means to fall into disorder or lose balance. مختل is that verb's active participle, built on the مُفْتَعِل pattern of Form VIII, with the two identical root consonants ل-ل merged into one geminated sound marked by the shadda. Modern usage extended the word from physical imbalance to describe unstable minds, systems, and situations.
