Etymology

From the Semitic triliteral root ف-ض-ل (f-ḍ-l), whose base sense is to exceed or be left over. What exceeds a measure becomes a surplus, and what surpasses others becomes superior, so the root yields merit and excellence. From the idea of giving beyond what is owed comes the sense of favor and grace.
