Etymology

صَدَّق comes from the Semitic root ص-د-ق, which carries the sense of truth and sincerity. The basic verb صَدَقَ means to tell the truth. The Form II pattern, with a doubled middle consonant, turns this into a factitive: to treat as true, that is, to believe. The same root gives صِدْق (truth) and صَدَقة (alms).
