قائِم is the active participle of the verb قام (qāma), 'to stand or rise.' It derives from the common Semitic root q-w-m. Cognate verbs in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Geʿez carry the same sense of standing and rising. In Arabic the participle widened to cover anything upright, established, or still in force.
