Etymology

قابِل is the active participle of the verb قَبِلَ, meaning to accept or to receive. It comes from the Semitic root ق-ب-ل, which carries the sense of facing, fronting, and receiving. The same root gives قَبْل, meaning before, and قِبْلة, the direction Muslims face in prayer. As an adjective it describes whatever can take on, accept, or undergo an action.
