Etymology
Kāhin comes from the Semitic root k-h-n, tied to the verb kahana, to divine or act as a priest. The same root gives the noun kihāna, divination or priesthood. It is one of the oldest religious-office words in the Semitic languages, predating Islam, when a kāhin was a tribal figure who delivered rhymed oracular sayings.
