Etymology
The word goes back to يهود (Yahud), the Arabic name for the Jews, which itself comes from Hebrew and ultimately from the name Judah, one of the twelve tribes of Israel. Arabic attaches the nisba suffix ي to يهود to form يهودي, meaning 'of Judah' or 'belonging to the Jews.' The term entered Arabic through direct contact with Jewish communities in the Arabian Peninsula well before Islam.
