Etymology

Mā'idah is a feminine participle-shaped noun built on the Semitic root m-y-d, whose verb māda/yamīdu means to sway or totter. Arab lexicographers explain the name as a table brought in already loaded with food, as if swaying under its weight, or one that comes and goes as it is carried in and cleared. The word gives its name to Surah al-Ma'ida in the Quran, which tells of a table sent down from heaven at the request of Jesus's disciples. As a Semitic word, it has no attested Proto-Indo-European root.
