Etymology
Arabic borrowed تِلِفُون from French téléphone, close in form to English telephone. The French word was coined in the nineteenth century from Greek tēle, meaning far, and phōnē, meaning voice or sound. The term spread into Arabic in the early twentieth century along with the device itself, and it remains the everyday word for the machine even though the more formal term هاتف is also used in writing and news broadcasts.
