Etymology

The word comes from the Arabic triliteral root ن-ص-ب, whose base verb نَصَبَ means to erect, plant upright, or set something firmly in place. نُصْب is the underlying verbal-noun pattern فُعْل of that root, so it names the result of the action: a thing that has been set up, such as a pillar, statue, or monument. Arabic is a Semitic language, not Indo-European, so it has no Proto-Indo-European root; its relatives lie instead in other Semitic languages.
