Etymology

The root ن-ق-د originally meant to test or tap a coin to check that it was genuine silver, not counterfeit. From that sense of scrutiny, the noun نقد came to mean cash or coin itself, since coins were the things being examined. The same root gave rise to a separate branch of meaning, criticism, since to criticize is also to examine closely and judge. نَقْدِيّ is the adjective built from نقد with the nisba ending يّ, meaning of or pertaining to cash.
