مَتّ comes from the triliteral Semitic root م ت ت, a geminate verb pattern in which the second and third root letters are identical. Its core sense is physical: to pull or stretch something taut, like a rope. Arabic extended this image of tension to social bonds, so مَتَّ إليه بصلة came to mean invoking or claiming a tie of kinship with someone. No secure Indo-European cognates exist, since Arabic belongs to the separate Semitic family.
